Audrey Giles, a Full Professor in the School of Human Kinetics, is an applied cultural anthropologist examining physical activity, injury prevention, as well as sport for development interventions. Working in partnerships with Indigenous communities, primarily in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic regions, she focuses on cultural adaptation and applies a gendered lens to her research activities. As an educator, Audrey includes community-based methodologies and perspectives in the classroom.
The University of Ottawa recognized Audrey’s passion and energy in both the classroom and field research with an Excellence in Education Award. With the research grant provided with the award, she plans on examining how involvement in community-based research is perceived and experienced, placing the focus on the community members’ and partners’ experiences, rather than the researchers'. The research may provide improved approaches to initiate and sustain such collaborations. Findings from the study will be brought back to the classroom, for the benefits of trainees.
