Professor Annette M. Cormier O'Connor RN, PhD, FCAHS, Distinguished Professor and Professor Emerita at the School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa,was appointed Officer to the Order of Canada for her foundational leadership and pioneering research in the field of shared decision making, through which she has championed patient engagement in health care - related decisions.
Dr. O’Connor established the Ottawa Health Decision Center and became a pre-eminent leader in the field of shared decision making. Her research has improved knowledge, tools and standards for informing patients about difficult treatment decisions and has led to new policies and legislation to promote shared decision making between patients and health professionals. She is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and has received the Exemplary Leadership Award from the Society for Medical Decision Making.
Professor O’Connor received her BScN from the School of Nursing at the University of Ottawa, MScN from the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto, and her PhD in Medical Science from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
